Travel Outside Kaiser Permanente States for Members Enrolled in Select Medicare Advantage Plans

When traveling within the United States, but outside of Kaiser Permanente’s operating states of Washington, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Oregon, Virginia, and Washington, D.C, you can visit any Medicare-participating provider for covered care at in-network cost-shares. Plus, our partnership with MultiPlan makes accessing Medicare-participating providers even easier. You will have access to out-of-state providers and help locating the right doctor, so you can get the care you need while traveling.

We recommend taking these steps to easily locate a provider and help Kaiser Permanente continue to seamlessly coordinate your care when you return home.

  1. Pack your Kaiser Permanente Medicare Advantage (HMO) member ID card when traveling. Your ID card serves as proof of your insurance, and with the MultiPlan logo on it, signals that you have coverage outside Kaiser Permanente regions.
  2. Call Member Services toll-free at 1-206-630-4600 or 1-888-901-4600 (TTY 711), 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., 7 days a week. Confirm that your health plan coverage includes National Visitor Travel and inform the Member Services representative that you will be traveling outside of Washington.
  3. Locate a MultiPlan provider by referring to our Medicare Advantage online provider directory at kp.org/finddoctors.
  4. To find all Medicare-participating providers, including out-of-state providers, visit medicare.gov/care-compare.
  5. If receiving care from a MultiPlan provider: At your out-of-state appointment, provide your Kaiser Permanente primary care provider’s name and contact information, and show your Kaiser Permanente Medicare Advantage (HMO) member ID card and let them know MultiPlan covers medical services received outside of Washington, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Oregon, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Ask them to bill MultiPlan for your service.

All Kaiser Permanente Washington Medicare Advantage plans, including plans that do not cover the Nationwide Travel Benefit, will continue to offer travel coverage within Pima and Maricopa counties of Arizona, in partnership with Banner Health.

If you seek medical care with a non-MultiPlan Medicare-participating provider or non-Banner provider in Pima and Maricopa counties in Arizona, you may be responsible for covering upfront costs associated with your visit. Once you have covered the cost of your care, you can seek reimbursement from Kaiser Permanente by filling out a Member Reimbursement Form for Medical Claims.

In advance of traveling, we recommend refilling all maintenance medications to avoid having to obtain a refill out-of-area. In the event you need a medication while out-of-area, you can have your prescriptions shipped to your location. All Kaiser Permanente Medicare Advantage (HMO) members with a prescription drug benefit have access to Kaiser Permanente mail-order drugs with nationwide shipping. If you must use an out-of-network retail pharmacy within the United States, you will generally have to pay the full cost (rather than your normal cost share) at the time you fill your prescription. You can ask to be reimbursed for a share of the 30-day supply cost by completing the Member Reimbursement Drug Claim Form.
